Thinking about permanent makeup for brows, lips, or eyeliner? Here are straightforward answers to the questions we hear most at our San Francisco studio.
Does permanent makeup hurt?
Numbing is applied before and during the procedure. Most clients describe light pressure or scratching rather than sharp pain. Sensitivity varies by person and by area.
How long does permanent makeup last?
It is semi-permanent. Results typically last from one to a few years depending on skin type, sun exposure, skincare, and the area treated. Brows and lips fade at different rates, so plan periodic color refreshes.
Why is a touch-up needed?
Healing can lighten pigment unevenly. A touch-up session, usually scheduled several weeks after the first visit, refines color and shape. See our permanent makeup policy for details.
What affects how long it lasts?
- Skin type: oily skin may fade pigment faster.
- Sun exposure: use SPF on treated areas.
- Skincare actives such as retinoids and exfoliating acids.
- Pigment color and technique.
Is permanent makeup safe?
When done by a trained professional using single-use needles and proper sanitation, it is considered safe for most people. Always ask about hygiene and review a consultation form for health considerations.
Who should wait?
Tell your artist if you are pregnant or nursing, have a skin condition in the treated area, are on certain medications, or have a history of keloids. Your artist may ask you to consult your doctor first.
